Parkview Varsity Rifle Team Finish 6th in State, Elizabeth Olivares wins Silver

The Parkview High School Rifle Team finished in Sixth place at the State Championship on March 13 held at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. Led by Senior Elizabeth Olivares, the Parkview shooters shot an 1135. Elizabeth Olivares shot an impressive 290 during the match to qualify for the finals. Then in the finals, Elizabeth led all the finalists with an 102.6 to leapfrog into 2nd place in the individuals.

The team's 6th place finish caps a record year for the Parkview Rifle team where the previous school team record was broken on 4 occasions. The Panthers won the Area 6 championship and were undefeated in the regular season and in the playoffs. Key to the success of the team this year was great depth. Nine different shooters participated in competition during the season. Senior Elizabeth Olivares, Juniors Shahzaib Jiwani and Mark Stucky, Sophomores Amanda Korb and Team Captain Melissa Quartarone, and Freshmen Elizabeth Allen, Nathan Marks and Chace Stewart all competed during the 2007-2008 season and contributed to the success.

Two Parkview Shooters Honored as All-State

Never before has Parkview had an All-State Shooter and in the 2007-2008 season, two Parkview rifle team members made the Georgia All-State Team. Senior Elizabeth Olivares and Sophomore Melissa Quartarone both made the All-State Team and were honored on March 13 as two of Georgia's top ten shooters. Melissa was the only Sophomore on the All-State Team.

On March 27th thru 29th in a grueling multi-day event, Melissa Quartarone of Parkview participated in the National JROTC Championships at Fort Benning in Columbus, GA. The Sophomore finished 22nd in the competition that featured 140 of the nation's best High School JROTC shooters. Amongst the Marine Corps JROTC shooters, Melissa finished 6th. As a result of qualifying for the competition at the Eastern Regional Championship, the Parkview shooter earned an EIC Silver Medal. The Excellence In Competition medals are sponsored by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Melissa had previously earned her EIC Bronze to become the second shooter ever at Parkview to earn the Bronze and is now the first (of hopefully many) to earn the Silver honor.
