The prestigious Distinguished Badge program began in 1884 when the U. S. Army first awarded the Distinguished Marksman Badge. Eventually, there were Distinguished Badge programs for each service and for civilians. The Distinguished Rifleman and Distinguished Pistol Shot Badges are the highest honor that military and civilian rifle shooters can aspire to earn. In 2001, a Junior Distinguished Badge for excellence in three-position air rifle competitions was added. (Courtesy Civilian Marksmanship Program)

Since the Junior Badge was created in 2001, over 100,000 shooters under the age of 18 have competed in events to earn points towards this honor. Of those 100,000, less than 300 badges have been awarded. This top 0.3% of shooters in the history of youth riflery is represented by approximately 30 from the state of Georgia. Parkview High School Junior Melissa Quartarone is the first shooter from Parkview High School and the first shooter from Gwinnett County to earn this honor. To earn this honor, Melissa placed highly in the Marine Corps JROTC Eastern Regional Championship in 2008, the National JROTC Championships in 2008, the 2009 Marine Corps JROTC Service Championships and in regional Competitions around the south along with First Place victories at Fort Benning Rifle Camp and in her most exciting victory, a first place finish at The Dixie Challenge against shooters from 4 states. This victory was won in the finals by 0.1 point - a difference of 20 thousandths of a inch (0.020") in a 70 shot competition. She has set the Parkview school record in 3x20 competitions with a score of 586 out of 600 beating her previous school record of 584. Only 4 times has a Gwinnett County shooter ever shot a score of at least 580 in sanctioned competition and Melissa is responsible for 3 of those 4 times.
